Local man speaks about horrors of war
By Frank Wallis Bulletin Staff Writer Baxter Bulletin

Offutt talks about some harrowing moments during World War II

There is nothing glamorous about war, according to Rex Offutt, every machine gun operator with the armies 78th Field artillery Battalion during World War II in Europe .

It dirty. It's monotonous. You're scared to death. Your mouth gets dry, and your jaw muscles are tensed up all the time, said Offutt." I suppose you might get used to some of that, but you don't get to the point you’re not bothered by what's around you. At least I didn't.

Offutt fought in the campaigns of Sicily, Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. He witnessed a fresh aftermath of D- Day and fought in the Battle of H

Hedgerows in France and the Battle of the Bulge and witness the aftermath of the Malme

Offutt said he saw the snow-covered “pile" of 86 captured American soldiers who were gunned down by German soldiers as they fled in the Battle of the Bulge at Malmedy. At 84, Offutt still winces as he remembers the Malmedy scene.

"The Germans were vicious… right there," Offutt said. "God almighty, what they did."

Offutt and the 78th landed with the 2nd Armored Division on Omaha Beach two days after D-Day. Many American soldiers were still washing up on shore from two previous days’                                      landings. The 78th was harassed by sniper and artillery fire, making for a chaotic landing.

Offutt was in the middle of the fighting in the Battle of the Hedgerows across the north of France. He found himself in the sights of German guns for the first time during that battle.

"I’11 never forget the first time I got shot at," said Offutt. "There was a break, and I thought it would be a good time to write home. So, I had my tablet out and I thought I

was hid when a German fighter flew over and opened up on me." The strafe narrowly missed. Offutt said he balled up and cradled his face in hands. "I didn't want to be shot in the face. I stayed that way for three or four minutes before I had the nerve to look up."

Offutt would be in the line of fire many more times. He dreaded artillery fire more than rifle fire. "When you're within rifle range and you know it, you can move around and take cover," he said. ”Artillery can be coming from over a ridge, and you don't know where it’s going to land.”

Being on the ground when 500-pound bombs are falling is uncomfortable, too.

"Me and a buddy were looking out the back door of a house where we had taken cover during one of our bombing runs when one of those 500-pound things hit just right there close by," he said. "When that thing went off, it was just like someone slugging you in stomach."

The machine gun he operated was mounted on a half-track. He was an open target to snipers in the many villages

the 78th rolled through. The snipers, however, generally reserved their opportunities to "pick off the officers." Still, Offutt kept the muzzle of his machine gun trained on the high places where snipers might be stationed. He often fired where there wasn't a target just to keep any hiding snipers guessing.

The frequent snipers who remained in the liberated villages of north France weren't the only guns the 78th had to worry about. The dreaded German 88 millimeter, acclaimed the best gun of its kind in Europe, was lethal against tanks and half-tracks within ranges of 1,000 to 2,000 yards. Offutt remembers a colonel who was notorious for a cavalier attitude in the field who learned about the 88 the hard way.

During the 78th's jog across France, the column was once stopped cold in its tracks at the apex of a sharp curve on a rural dirt road. The colonel in command drove to the front of the column, where a sergeant explained an 88 was zeroed-in on the curve and was firing on everything that ventured

around it. Offutt said the colonel cursed the sergeant and boarded a half-track at the front of the column and ordered it to get moving and the column to follow.

As the half-track rounded the curve into the 88's range, a projectile hit its armored front.
